From Cells to Service, <\/span>UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART)<\/span> is dedicated to changing the lives of individuals and families impacted by autism spectrum disorder. L<\/span>ed by <\/span>Daniel Geschwind, MD, PhD<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Susan Bookheimer, PhD<\/span><\/a>, UCLA CART comprises outstanding faculty from the UCLA Departments of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, Neurology, Human Genetics, Pediatrics, Biostatistics, and the School of Education and Information Studies.<\/span><\/p>

The collaborative UCLA CART team of clinicians and scientists have integrated their research, clinical, and treatment programs to provide a unique, groundbreaking multidisciplinary approach to studying and caring for individuals with ASD<\/span>\u2014including studies in molecular genetics, brain imaging, and infant\/toddler development, the use of scientific models, and interventions for infants through adults, including children who are minimally verbal. In addition, UCLA CART works towards building strong partnerships with members of the autism community.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment is dedicated to improving the lives of all children and adults with autism, and their families, through its research, patient care, and training of the next generation of researchers and clinical practitioners. The UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment (CART) is dedicated to improving the lives of all children and adults with autism, and their families, through its research, patient care, and training of the next generation of researchers and clinical practitioners. It is in this context, that we stand in strong solidarity with our community and others across this country, catalyzed by the movement to support Black lives, in our outrage over the continuing disparities, brutality and structural racism that has disproportionately affected people of color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Despite the courageous efforts of many, very little has changed. It is clearly time to act more definitively to address the problems of both pernicious and overt racism through anti-racist actions. Although UCLA CART investigators have dedicated substantial efforts to working with under-represented groups in their research and treatment programs, such as our work in genetics and developing community-based treatment programs, we recognize that<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

we still have a long way to go to achieve our goals to minimize disparities in autism research and treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Racism and bigotry affect us all deeply. We pledge to continue to work to reduce the known racial disparities in autism diagnosis, treatment and participation in research, and acknowledge our responsibility to create a system of equity, increased diversity and inclusion within UCLA CART. We join with our patients and partners in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities to continue to educate ourselves, take sustained action, and be accountable towards the goals of social justice and reducing health disparities.<\/span><\/p>
